A PROMISE

After 2 months;

Sarah went to her college after a long time. Everyone gathered around her asking how she is and caring for her. But in the whole group of people, she only kept searching for one person who was nowhere to be found. She roamed around the whole college trying to find him but everyone who saw her kept talking to her but he wasn’t found. The day in the college was over and everyone was leaving the place. After waiting for a while, Sarah decided to leave too hoping she’ll find him at least tomorrow.

She left the place and on her way home stopped at a cafe. Ordering a coffee and putting the menu card down, she noticed someone similar sitting on the table opposite hers. She tried to ignore it for a while but the feeling was getting too strong. So, she woke up to find that the person was Aadarsh. Before she was able to see the person sitting opposite him, she ran away from that place. Her concentration quickly changed from that girl to Aadharsh cheating on her. She started shouting at him and breaking his cup and they had a really big argument there.

S: How can you do this to me…? I loved you… Why? Why would you do this to me?

A: Don’t act like you don’t know about me. You know me, I am like this.

S: So, you didn’t love me..? At all?

A: Stop this shit already. It’s not like we’re very physical or something, you won’t let me. So, I had to search for other ways to get laid.

S: So, you only stayed with me for sex? You didn’t love me at all?

A: What else am I supposed to do with you? Please don’t say something stupid like ‘Love’.

S: All this time, I was with you. I thought I had an impact on you. I thought you loved me as I loved you. Loved me enough to change yourself. I thought you did, I thought you changed for me. I….. I………

A: Why would I change for you? Do you even look at yourself? You look like a broken toy. Why would I even think of changing myself for someone like you? I knew that you are a stupid girl but How stupid can you be?
(Disgustingly looks at her and goes to the door to leave)

S:        (Speechless mouth movements)

A:          (Coming back from the gate)          In fact, wait for the biggest shock you can receive…

He leaves the cafe after telling her something. She falls down in a chair, in shock. Her mind was completely filled with sadness and hatred. Tears stopped coming out a while ago, but the crying wasn’t over. She was still shocked by all that happened around her, but too stuck in that moment that she can’t move forward. Her body started trembling. Mouth half-open. She had difficulty taking the smallest breaths. She felt her whole world shaking around her like there is an earthquake. She was sweating a lot and her whole mind became completely blank. She just sat there like a soulless body of flesh. No bodily movements, no observable changes, just sitting there like a statue with no brain…

A few minutes later Nisha rushes into the cafe. She watches Sarah in that state and ran towards her chair. Getting on her knees she hugged Sarah tightly, but Sarah didn’t respond in any way. In a few seconds, Sarah got a hold of herself. She closed her half-open mouth, started batting her eyes, and changed her face from shock-filled sorrow to normal. She removed Nisha’s arms wrapped around her and angrily told Nisha to move away from her. Nisha was shocked and started apologizing. She kept walking around Sarah begging her to listen while Sarah was walking away from her. Sarah got up on her scooter and while wearing her helmet asked Nisha, “Why did you do it? Why You? My best friend. Why would you of all, do it?”

N: I am sorry. I wasn’t myself. I was in a vulnerable state. I wasn’t in control of my actions. I am really sorry.

S: After all those bad things you said about him, my boyfriend. How can you sleep with him?..... That too while I was on my deathbed almost ready to die. What kind of a monster does that?

N: I am sorry. I wasn’t in control of myself. I was guilty about what I did to you and my girlfriend just told me that she has a crush on you and I was angry, I wanted to do something, let my stress out and I was weak.

S: So, you sleep with him? I told you how much I loved him. How many times did I tell you how much I loved him?

N: He approached me. He made the move. I wanted to remove my stress. I was in a bad place and not good at making any decisions. He made the move. And I… I just lost it. I regret it so much, you can’t imagine how much I am regretting it. Please… Please try to understand…. I am sorry.

S: Wow, you are such an amazing best friend. Thank you for being such a nice friend to me. Were you really a friend to me because you liked me or was this always your intention?

N: Sarah, don’t say that! Don’t you dare say that! I loved you. I loved us. We are together since childhood. We are practically sisters.

S: What kind of a sister sleeps with her sister’s boyfriend, that too when she is on her deathbed?

N: I am sorry. I really am                   (Starts Crying)

S: Oh please. Stop the drama.                 (Starts the scooter and left)

N:                     (Still Crying but now knelt right there on the road, with her hands covering her face)

S:       (Came back)          Okay let's assume, you didn’t do it on purpose. Why did you meet him today? Why are you two out here today?

N: He said that we can talk it out and figure out a way to bury that we ever did it.

S: Ohh, so you were planning to lie to me about it good.

N: No, no. I just didn’t wanna hurt you. Even today, here, he started asking me if I wanna sleep with him again. I kept saying no. And when I saw you there, I got really scared. That’s why I ran away. I am really really sorry. Please please try to understand.

S: You should’ve agreed. It's not like we both are friends anymore and he and I aren’t in a relationship anymore too. So just…. just go. Do whatever you like. But never ever try to contact me again.

N: Sarah Please, Please. Please talk to me. Let’s end this thing. I don’t want him or anyone else. I only want my best friend back. Please, Sarah, Listen to me.            (Sarah starts her scooter again and Nisha starts speaking loudly)          Sarah Please…. Sarah……

S:          (In a grumpy voice)             If you don’t let me go now. I will kill you. Let me go. LET. ME. GO…

Sarah let go of Nisha and went on her scooter. Her partial blindness kicked in. She wasn’t able to see the road clearly and fell off the scooter. Luckily, it was near her house. So her dad came and picked her up and got her checked out. The doctor explained that maybe her partial blindness is getting triggered by some actions and advised Sarah to have a blind stick with her at all times if this happens during an emergency. She got a blind stick with her dad. And half-an-hour later, she started to observe that she could watch clearly again. Her dad held her hand and made her use the other hand for the blind stick.

S: Dad, I am okay now. I can see everything clearly. I don’t need all this.

D: Shut up. Who knows when this is going to be triggered again? Who knows when this is going to happen again?

S: Dad, I am fine.
D: Clearly, you are not.
S: I am now. I am able to see things clearly.

D: Maybe for now. But get used to using the blind stick too. You don’t know how the blindness might trigger and you can’t risk it.

S: Sure Dad. Now let me go. I am fine.

Her dad still accompanies her to her bedroom, puts her to sleep, closes the door, and leaves the room. She starts feeling dizzy and she notices that she’s getting partially blind again but she also blacked out and went to sleep. In the middle of the night, her dad woke up to a noise and went out of the room to inspect what it is about. Finding nothing suspicious, he went upstairs and knocked on Sarah’s door, “Sarah Beta, are you okay?” there wasn’t any response. After knocking again, he got an angry response from an angry Sarah, “Why would you knock on my door at this time of the night? Let me Rest. I am already tired from what happened today. Now, leave me alone and let me rest”. He apologized, “Sorry Beta!” and went back downstairs back to his sleep.

The next morning; her mom started banging on her door, “Sarah! Wake up! You’ve got to watch this. Who will do such a thing? She was such a sweet person. Sarah! Are you listening to me?”. Sarah woke up, and in that sleepiness asks her mom, “What is it, mom? What happened?”. “Come out and watch this, Nisha….. Nisha was killed last night”. Sarah woke up, she lost all her sleepiness. She rose from the bed, opened the door, and ran downstairs where in the news what her mom said was being telecasted. “A young woman, Nisha Chaudhry was killed last night on the roads of our city. The killer didn’t just kill normally but also took her eyes out and those eyes are nowhere to be found. How can we feel safe anymore if a woman was killed on the road?.......” Sarah was shocked. She rushed to Nisha’s place and there she was, Nisha. A corpse lying in the middle of the hall in their room. Put wholly in white wraps and ready to be loaded into an ambulance waiting outside. Sarah ran inside to hug her one last time but Nisha’s mom held her back. She hugged her and started weeping uncontrollably. Her mom was crying too but was also trying to control her. She was crying at her mom saying, “My last words to her were that I hate her and never wanted to see her again. I loved her. She was my sister!” She went to the burial grounds where she was buried and stood there until everyone there left. After a few hours of standing alone, she went to the tombstone. She whispered to the tombstone, “I am sorry that I made you feel that bad before you died. You really are my sister and I loved you. Now, as your sister, I promise you. I promise you that I’ll find the person who killed you. I’ll bring him to justice. I PROMISE!”
